Purchasing Dubai Real Estate
The Dubai real estate market is poised for an interesting year in 2019. With the government investing a record amount in the economy for the next three years, and third quarter real estate transactions in 2018 reporting both year-on-year and month-on-month increases, it’s an exciting time to be participating in Dubai real estate.
RESIDENTIAL REAL ESTATE SHOWS PROMISE
Residential sales drove the increase in numbers for Dubai’s recent third quarter results. There are a variety of residential properties for sale in Dubai, and this is ideal for those looking to take advantage of opportunities in this area. The prices have also slightly dipped to provide ample opportunity for buyers. Residential buyers have good options in type, location, and amenities amongst properties.
SHORT-TERM RENTALS GIVE PROMPT RETURNS
One of the best ways to profit from a residential real estate purchase is to use the property for either occasional or full-time short-term vacation rentals. Online sites such as Airbnb and Booking.com provide lucrative opportunities for property owners to charge higher rates than traditional rentals while maintaining full control over their property.
A new home buyer can generate cash returns on a property as soon as it is set-up for vacation rentals. Payments are promptly deposited to the homeowner’s account at the end of a stay, and the potential is only limited by the ability to quickly have the home ready to let out again.
For those who live in their homes part time, short-term rentals generate income whenever a property is available for rental, even if it is just one week or one weekend a month. Home owners find that short-term rentals can subsidise, or even pay for a vacation; generating income while the home owner takes advantage of travel opportunities.
INCOME GENERATING PROPERTY
When you list your home or investment property as a short-term vacation rental, you are capitalising on the potential within the property as your investment appreciates.
Using a residential property for short-term holiday lets is a smart and secure way to generate income while growing your investment portfolio. If you would like to learn how to take advantage of this opportunity with minimal effort on your part, please contact us today.

Five Reasons to Rent out Your Dubai Apartment
Residential rentals in Dubai are not performing as well as in past years. BUT vacation rentals across the city are thriving! If your Dubai apartment is available for just a few days a month, or for months at a time, here are five reasons to use short-term rentals with your property:
1. ONLINE PLATFORMS BRING THE GUESTS TO YOU
Airbnb began fully operating in the Dubai market in 2016 and has become the most popular online booking site for short-term vacation rentals. Other sites like booking.com, homeaway.com, and vrbo.com also showcase Dubai properties. This means you have access to tourists from around the world who are looking for an apartment to rent when they come to Dubai. If you’re organised, you can list the same property on all four booking sites, giving your apartment maximum exposure.
2. CHARGE MORE FOR SHORT-TERM LETS
When compared to standard long-term rentals, short-term lets generate up to 50% more income! What’s not to love? This is the best way to generate the most income from your property! And, you can adjust the price based on the season (or events that increase demand for properties) so you’re always taking advantage of opportunities. Hint: When Expo 2020 hits, your apartment will be in high demand!
3. FULL CONTROL OF YOUR APARTMENT
You get to decide when your apartment is available. Did you book a last minute mini vacation for yourself this weekend? No problem! Set the availability on your apartment and book a paying guest! Do you have family wanting to come for a visit? No problem! Block off those days as unavailable.
4. DON’T WAIT FOR PAYMENT
Traditional rentals can cause challenges when collecting payment. When you rent out your apartment with a short-term vacation let, the booking platform takes payment from guests before they check in! That means you’ll receive payment when the guest checks out. And platforms like Airbnb also provide homeowner protection, helping to protect the value in your home while you increase the balance in your bank account.
5. YOU DON’T HAVE TO DO ANYTHING
Does renting out your apartment sound great—except for all the work? It’s true, there’s work involved. In Dubai, you must register yourself, your property, and provide specific information to Dubai’s Department of Tourism and Commerce Marketing (DTCM). You also need to stage, photograph, and list your property, maintain contact with guests, and adjust your availability when using multiple platforms.
Fortunately, Frank Porter can do all the work for you so you can sit back, relax and count your dirhams. Is your apartment not quite ready for guests (or even completely bare)? Frank Porter offers everything from staging to full design services. We communicate with potential guests, manage arrivals and departures, coordinate across platforms, and take care of all the paperwork and regulations. We even do the laundry!
Whether you do it on your own, or use Frank Porter, there’s never been a better time to rent out your apartment. Turn your home into flexible income that you control! Get in touch today to start your holiday home journey.

Family Friendly Dubai
Dubai can add another hit to its long list of advantages: fantastic for families! With all there is to do and experience in Dubai–along with the city’s welcoming approach to families—it’s no wonder Dubai is an ideal family travel destination.
LIFE’S A BEACH IN DUBAI
The question for families visiting Dubai isn’t “should we go to the beach” but “which beach shall we go to?” There are many fantastic beaches that cater to families. If you’re enjoying the convenience and affordability of an Airbnb Dubai, you can take advantage of day rates to many of the biggest hotels beaches and waterparks. Or, explore the many free beaches in Dubai. Check out Kitesurfing Beach (yes, you’ll have a great view of the kitesurfers!), Jumeirah Open Beach, Sunset Beach, or Al Mamzar Beach Park if you want beautiful beaches, sand for sandcastles, water for endless play, and facilities that make a family visit a perfect day out.
MAKE TIME FOR ADVENTURE
You’ll want to set aside a day or two (or three!) to enjoy Dubai’s fantastic theme parks. IMG Worlds of Adventure is the world’s largest indoor theme park, and it’s bound to delight the thrill-seekers in the family. Motiongate Dubai is great for movie lovers of all ages with rides for everything from The Ghostbusters to Shrek. There’s also a Smurfs Village which is perfect for younger kids and the young at heart.
Legoland Dubai is always a popular place for families, with over 40 rides, and Lego models everywhere you look. Kids will love the kid-powered rides where they get to steer boats or drive cars. When it’s time to cool off, Legoland Water Park is waiting with waterslides and activities geared for 2-12 year olds.
Be sure to round out your park tour with a trip to Bollywood Parks and this first-of-a-kind salute to the Bollywood film industry. There are rides, attractions, and live shows, along with Indian restaurants and western foods.
DAY TRIP TO HATTA
Whether you book a tour, or make your own way to Hatta, it’s a day trip worth taking. Be sure to plan your time so you can stop at the Dubai Camel Racing Club and watch traditional camel racing with a modern twist (the ‘jockeys’ are robots!). As you climb the mountain to your destination, you’ll appreciate the cooler air and spectacular scenery. Kids will enjoy exploring the Hatta Heritage Village, taking a boat ride across the Hatta Dam lake, wadi-bashing along the dry riverbed, and climbing to the summit at Hatta Hill Park.
There’s far more for families to explore in Dubai—you’re only limit is the length of your stay. Find a great holiday home, book your tickets, and enjoy the family vacation of a lifetime.

Living the Great Expat Life: The Ultimate Cost of Living in Dubai Guide
Dubai continues to attract professionals, entrepreneurs, couples and families from around the world. With zero personal income tax on salaries, a strong sense of safety and an exceptional choice of places to live, work and spend your free time, it is easy to understand the appeal of living in Dubai.
However, a tax-free salary does not automatically make Dubai inexpensive. The amount you need will depend heavily on your choice of community, property size, lifestyle and family circumstances. Rent may be your biggest outgoing, but utility deposits, district cooling, internet, transport, healthcare and school fees can also have a significant impact on your monthly budget.
This guide provides a realistic breakdown of the cost of living in Dubai for a single person, a couple and a family. We cover everyday living expenses in Dubai, highlight costs that new residents often overlook and explore some of the best communities for expats.
Whether you are considering a move or already preparing for your relocation, this guide will help you estimate how much you need to live comfortably in Dubai and choose a lifestyle that fits your budget.
Is It a Good Idea to Live in Dubai? Lifestyle vs. Reality
For many expats, Dubai is an attractive place to live, offering strong career opportunities, modern infrastructure, a warm climate and excellent global connectivity. Dubai International Airport provides easy access to Europe, Asia and Africa, making it particularly appealing to professionals and families who travel regularly.
One of the city's biggest financial advantages is that the UAE does not levy personal income tax on individuals. This often leaves residents with more of their salary for housing, savings and everyday spending, although some expats may still have tax obligations in their home country.
Dubai also offers a high standard of living, with international schools, private healthcare, beaches, restaurants, shopping centres and a wide range of leisure facilities. However, living costs can be high. Rent, school fees and childcare are often the largest expenses, while utilities, health insurance, transport and entertainment can quickly add up.
For expats with a competitive salary and realistic expectations, Dubai can offer an excellent quality of life. The key is to weigh your expected take-home pay against the full cost of your preferred lifestyle, rather than focusing solely on the appeal of a tax-free salary.
Average Cost of Living in Dubai: Breakdown by Family Structure
The average cost of living in Dubai depends heavily on household size, accommodation and lifestyle. Two people earning the same salary can have very different monthly expenses depending on whether they share an apartment, live in a premium waterfront community, own a car or have children attending private school.
As a practical starting point, current cost-of-living data estimates that one person spends approximately AED 4,100 per month before rent, while a family of four spends around AED 14,450 before accommodation. Housing can then add approximately AED 6,250 per month for an average studio, AED 7,900 for a one-bedroom apartment or AED 11,250 for a two-bedroom property.
Household
Budget-conscious estimate
Comfortable estimate
Main cost variable
HouseholdSingle person
AED 3,150–AED 5,900 excluding rent
AED 9,400–AED 13,800 including rent
Community, transport and dining
HouseholdCouple
AED 11,800–AED 20,000 including rent
AED 20,000+ for a premium lifestyle
Property type, cars and leisure
HouseholdFamily of four
AED 22,000–AED 35,000+ including rent
AED 35,000–AED 45,000+ with premium schooling
Rent, school fees, childcare and transport
These figures should be treated as planning ranges rather than fixed minimums. Employer-paid health insurance, housing allowances and education benefits can significantly reduce the salary required.
Average Cost of Living in Dubai for a Single Person
The average cost of living in Dubai for a single person starts at approximately AED 4,500 to AED 6,500 per month, excluding rent. This range suits a budget-conscious expat who cooks regularly, uses the Dubai Metro or bus network, and limits expensive restaurants and entertainment.
A typical monthly budget before rent may include:
AED 1,200–AED 2,000 for groceries and household essentials
AED 350–AED 700 for utilities, cooling and internet contributions
AED 300–AED 700 for public transport and occasional taxis
AED 800–AED 1,500 for dining, fitness and entertainment
AED 500–AED 1,000 for mobile services, clothing and miscellaneous costs
Once accommodation is included, a comfortable mid-range budget is closer to AED 11,000 to AED 14,000 per month. This can cover a studio or one-bedroom apartment in a reasonably connected community, regular social activities, a gym membership and occasional restaurant meals.
A single expat could live on less by renting a room or sharing an apartment. However, someone choosing Downtown Dubai, Dubai Marina or another premium neighborhood may spend substantially more, particularly if they drive rather than use public transport. Property Finder currently places average Dubai studio rent at around AED 75,000 per year and average one-bedroom rent at approximately AED 95,000, although prices vary considerably by community.
Cost of Living for a Couple in Dubai
The cost of living for a couple in Dubai generally falls between AED 12,000 and AED 18,000 per month, including rent. A dual-income couple without children often has greater financial flexibility because housing, utilities and internet costs can be shared.
A mid-range monthly budget for two people could include:
AED 6,500–AED 9,500 for a studio or one-bedroom apartment
AED 2,000–AED 3,500 for groceries and household purchases
AED 800–AED 1,500 for utilities, cooling, internet and mobile plans
AED 1,000–AED 2,500 for public transport, taxis or one car
AED 1,500–AED 3,000 for restaurants, fitness and entertainment
A couple living in Jumeirah Village Circle, Dubai Silicon Oasis, Al Barsha or a similar mid-market area may remain near the lower end of the range. Choosing a larger apartment or a waterfront home in Dubai Marina, Palm Jumeirah, or Downtown Dubai can push the total beyond AED 18,000.
Couples should also consider how rent is paid. Although monthly payment options are becoming more common, many tenancy agreements still require several post-dated cheques. Security deposits, agency fees, Ejari registration, utility deposits and furnishing costs can therefore create a substantial upfront expense even when the ongoing monthly budget appears manageable.
Cost of Living in Dubai for a Family
The cost of living in Dubai for a family is typically between AED 22,000 and AED 35,000 or more per month for two adults and two children. Accommodation, education and transport are usually the three largest expenses.
A family budget may include:
AED 10,000–AED 16,000 for a two- or three-bedroom home
AED 3,000–AED 5,000 for groceries and household essentials
AED 1,200–AED 2,500 for utilities, cooling, internet and mobile plans
AED 2,000–AED 5,000 for one or two cars, fuel, insurance and road charges
AED 2,000–AED 8,000+ per child for monthly school-fee provision
AED 1,500–AED 4,000 for healthcare, activities, clothing and entertainment
Private education is often the second-largest household expense after rent. Depending on the school, curriculum and year group, annual tuition can range from approximately AED 25,000 to more than AED 95,000 per child. Some established British and American schools charge substantially more in later year groups: KHDA fee information shows annual charges above AED 89,000 at the American School of Dubai and above AED 100,000 for some Dubai College years. Uniforms, transport, devices, trips and extracurricular activities may be charged separately.
Monthly Expense Checklist
Use these estimated monthly costs to build a realistic Dubai budget based on your household size. Actual spending will vary depending on your community, property type, transport choices and lifestyle.

Cost of Living in Dubai: Which Communities Offer the Best Value?
Choosing the best community for living in Dubai depends on more than rental price alone. Your workplace, preferred property type, transport needs and everyday lifestyle should all influence where you decide to live.
Some expats want to be close to beaches, restaurants and nightlife, while others prioritize larger homes, quieter surroundings, parks and nearby schools. The following communities suit different budgets and stages of expat life.
Dubai Marina and JBR: Best for Young Professionals and Coastal Living
Dubai Marina and Jumeirah Beach Residence are ideal for singles and couples who want a lively waterfront lifestyle. Both communities offer easy access to beaches, restaurants, cafés, gyms and entertainment, making them especially popular with residents who want plenty to do close to home.
Dubai Marina is known for its high-rise apartments, marina promenade and transport connections, while JBR offers direct access to the beach and The Walk. The atmosphere is energetic and social, particularly during evenings and weekends.
The main drawback is cost. Apartments with sea or marina views often command premium rents, and residents may pay more for convenience, location and access to leisure facilities. These communities may therefore be less suitable for families seeking a large home or expats working with a tighter accommodation budget.
Jumeirah Village Circle and Arjan: Best for Space and Value
Jumeirah Village Circle and Arjan are strong options for budget-conscious professionals, couples and families. Both communities generally provide more living space for each dirham spent than central or beachfront areas.
JVC offers apartments, townhouses and villas within an established residential neighborhood. Arjan is particularly popular with renters seeking modern apartments at more accessible prices while remaining within reach of areas such as Dubai Hills, Motor City and Al Barsha.
These communities suit residents who value space, practicality and lower rent over a central address. Supermarkets, nurseries, gyms and local cafés are readily available, although access to a car can make daily travel considerably easier.
For expats trying to control their cost of living in Dubai, JVC and Arjan can provide a useful balance between affordability, property size and access to essential services.
Downtown Dubai and Business Bay: Best for Executives and City-Center Living
Downtown Dubai and Business Bay place residents close to many of the city’s major commercial districts, luxury hotels, restaurants and attractions. They are particularly well-suited to executives and professionals working in Downtown, DIFC or along Sheikh Zayed Road.
Downtown Dubai offers a prestigious address near Burj Khalifa and Dubai Mall, while Business Bay combines modern high-rise living with convenient access to the city center. Both areas appeal to residents who prioritize a short commute, premium amenities and an active urban lifestyle.
However, central convenience usually comes with higher rental prices. Apartments may also offer less space than similarly priced homes in outer communities. Traffic and construction activity can be additional considerations, depending on the building and location.
Dubai Hills Estate and Arabian Ranches: Best for Family Living
Dubai Hills Estate and Arabian Ranches are among the most attractive options for families seeking larger homes, green spaces and a quieter residential environment.
Dubai Hills Estate offers a mixture of apartments, townhouses and villas alongside parks, retail facilities, schools and healthcare services. Its newer developments and relatively central location make it appealing to families who want suburban space without feeling too far removed from the city.
Arabian Ranches is better known for spacious villas, landscaped streets and an established community atmosphere. It is particularly suitable for families who value privacy, outdoor space and a long-term residential base.
Both areas typically require a larger housing budget than JVC or Arjan. Families should also account for higher utility costs, property maintenance and the likelihood of needing at least one car.
Which is the Best Community to Live in Dubai?
Dubai Marina and JBR are best suited to expats looking for beaches, dining and a lively social environment. JVC and Arjan offer greater value for residents who want more space without paying premium central rents.
Downtown Dubai and Business Bay are strong choices for executives who value location, convenience and luxury apartment living. Dubai Hills Estate and Arabian Ranches are better suited to families looking for villas, townhouses, parks and access to schools.
Before choosing a community, consider the full monthly cost rather than rent alone. Commuting expenses, school journeys, cooling charges, parking and access to public transport can all affect whether a neighborhood genuinely fits your lifestyle and budget.

What do cars, apartments, and investments and appliance repairs have in common? They’re all part of Dubai’s growing sharing economy. From ride sharing to crowd funding and nearly everything in between, people who have something to offer are connecting with people that want a service that is faster, less expensive, and of a higher quality than they can get from a standard company.
SHARING ECONOMY SPENDING PASSES $10 BILLION
Within the GCC, estimated spending in the sharing economy has topped $10 billion. While the transportation sector has seen the highest spending at nearly $3 billion, the accommodation section is expected to see the highest rate of growth going forward— whopping 42%. From those registered with sites like Airbnb and Booking.com and the guests that use the sharing economy for accommodations, this growth rate is exciting.
Consumers use the sharing economy for a variety of reasons including lower prices, the opportunity to benefit both the consumer and the producer, flexibility, and convenience. From a producer’s view, the sharing economy provides significant opportunities for generating income, often through resources they already own. Airbnb provides rentals of privately owned residences, Deliveroo brings prepared food to your doorstep, Careem and Carpool Arabia provide carpooling and ride sharing, mrUsta provides household services, and Beehive and Eureeca connect investors with growing businesses.
DUBAI CREATES WELCOMING ENVIRONMENT FOR SHARING ECONOMY
The sharing economy is not without its drawbacks. The biggest challenge is perceived lack of need—many consumers do not see the opportunities within the sharing economy as relevant to them. Someone who has always booked hotels may not see how Airbnb can benefit them. A person who has always counted on their bank to invest on their behalf may not see the need to participate in direct-to-business investing. Once this perception is adjusted—even in just one area—people tend to consistently participate in the sharing economy across sectors.

Dubai is increasingly becoming a welcoming place for the sharing economy. Regulations now allow for platforms like Airbnb to operate across the city, and the government is looking at further regulatory adjustments that will benefit both service providers and consumers. Dubai is also working on an initiative called ShareDXB which facilitates a sharing economy concept across businesses wanting to capitalise on unutilized resources.
AIRBNB PROPERTY MANAGEMENT WITH FRANK PORTER
Frank Porter recognises the challenges required to maximise the opportunity that Airbnb brings to the sharing economy. By offering full concierge services that handle every aspect of Airbnb short-term rentals, any individual with a residence or property that is unoccupied for part of the year can now take advantage of the income-generating platform that Airbnb has created. It is services such as Frank Porter that help connect resources to consumers through the sharing economy, generating mutually beneficial transactions that are becoming a significant part of the overall economy.

Is Airbnb the Sharing Economy’s Biggest Win?
The great thing about the sharing economy is how mutually beneficial it is. Every user benefits when they access the sharing economy. They always find services and products that are less expensive, more accessible, and generally better quality than they would find elsewhere. And every service/producer in a sharing economy benefits because they have access to more clients and reliable payments that just aren’t available in other ways.
But if there was a showdown between all the biggest sharing economy users—such as Airbnb, Uber, Deliveroo, RelayRides, Turo, and Taskrabbit—who would win? Which company gives the biggest benefits to both sides of their platform? Our money’s on Airbnb! Here’s why:
AIRBNB FILLS EMPTY HOMES, ROOMS, AND BOATS
As soon as a host registers their apartment on Airbnb they can start taking bookings and welcoming paying guests. Sure, in places like Dubai this can take a little more time as hosts either navigate the regulations or hire someone like Frank Porter to take care of it for them. But once they’re up, the guests start to come!
And Airbnb isn’t limited to renting out homes. No matter what type of dwelling you have, Airbnb can generate funds as you host guests from around the world. Of course, that’s another benefit. Airbnb can introduce you to a world of lovely people who are passionate about travel, adventure, and using the sharing economy.
AIRBNB HELPS TIRED PEOPLE SLEEP
Whether you’re a business traveller fitting work and meetings into flights and connections, or a family out on an adventure, Airbnb will connect you with some of the best places to lay your head at night.
In fact, for both families and business travellers, Airbnb provides a better night’s sleep and an all-around better travel experience than a hotel can offer. And that doesn’t include the benefits that come from better prices, the convenience of a home away from home, and stepping into a place that people care for like it’s their own (because it really is their own!)
AIRBNB BRINGS PEOPLE TOGETHER
Young couple in love starting family life, got a chance of acquiring independent home ownership, given key from new apartment, social renting, purchasing new apartment, meeting with real estate agent
When hosts list their place on Airbnb, it’s usually because they’re passionate about their hometown, and love sharing it with others. And the guests who use Airbnb are often looking for a meaningful connection with the place they visit that’s outside the artificial tourist traps that hotels generally involve.
Airbnb is a great way to connect people with each other and give them a unique way to experience the place they’re visiting. Of course, many guests have no actual contact with their hosts during a visit, but the very act of staying in a residential area, taking the host’s recommendations for places to eat and visit, and walking through neighbourhoods that real people live in gives a special connection to any visit.
It’s true we may be a bit biased, but based on all the advantages, we think Airbnb is a big winner for hosts and guests, and is the best thing going in the sharing economy.

Ramadan Kareem!
Muslims around the world use the beginning of May to prepare for Ramadan and Holy Month. Ramadan is an important part of the Muslim faith. In 2018 it will start near the middle of May and will take place until the middle of June. It includes prayer, fasting from sun up until sundown every day, giving to charity, and nightly feasts.
WHY DO MUSLIMS FAST DURING RAMADAN?
Muslims fast to remember those less fortunate who are suffering, to become closer to God, and to step back from worldly pleasures. They also fast from things like smoking, caffeine, and arguments as they focus on purifying themselves physically and spiritually. (Children, the elderly, those who are unwell, pregnant women, and those travelling are exempt from fasting.)
Fasting during Ramadan is called Sawm and is one of the Five Pillars of Islam. The other Pillars are: reciting the Muslim profession of faith with sincerity, performing ritual prayers, charity to help the poor and needy, and a pilgrimage to Mecca.
HOW IS EID CONNECTED TO RAMADAN?
Eid al-Fitr is the festival that happens after Ramadan ends for the year. It often includes dressing in new outfits and visiting the homes of friends and family to share gifts. Many families take this time to share with others less fortunate and to ensure everyone is able to celebrate Eid.
Eid al-Adha is the ‘festival of sacrifice’ that happens about 70 days after Ramadan ends. It marks the end of the annual pilgrimage to Mecca (Hajj) and traditionally is a time to slaughter animals. The meat from the slaughter is often divided into thirds: one third for family, one third for relatives and friends, and one third to the less fortunate.
HOW CAN NON-MUSLIMS PARTICIPATE?
Non-Muslims often join in the fasting together with Muslims and break their fast together during iftar (the meal that ends each day’s fast after sunset). This is a time to celebrate community and generosity. Along those lines, giving to charities is a wonderful way to participate in Ramadan for people from all backgrounds.
During the daylight hours when Muslims are fasting it is considered poor etiquette to eat or drink in public. Reserve these activities for private indoor spaces during Ramadan. Some establishments will provide screened-off areas to give privacy for those wishing to eat or drink during the daytime.
Other ways of showing respect include dressing conservatively, keeping music quiet or using headphones, and giving extra consideration for traffic during the time close to sundown when people are on their way to iftar, and checking business operating hours before making plans as these can vary during Ramadan.

Outside Dubai
Dubai’s location has helped it a become traveler’s paradise. Easy access to the Persian Gulf coast and the Arabian desert make this spectacular city an ultimate destination for adventure, history, experiences, culture, and shopping. Every tourist can find enough activities to make their visit special enough to want to stay longer and come back again as soon as possible.
Desert adventures hold a large appeal to visitors. There are tours to match every type of tourist from adventure-loving to peaceful scenic tours. You can hire a guide that will take you outside Dubai to the desert, go dune bashing (driving up and over sand dunes in 4-wheel drive vehicles), visit a camel farm and ride a camel, go sandboarding (like surfing, except down sand dunes), and enjoy a traditional dinner fireside before traveling back to Dubai. For a faster-paced option, visitors can experience a quad bike tour in the desert led by seasoned guides. This tour is generally a few hours in length, and includes navigating dunes and exploring the desert followed by Arabic coffee and traditional snacks before heading back to Dubai.
You can also enjoy a slower-paced trip to the desert with a drive through the Dubai Desert Conservation Reserve to see desert wildlife such as Arabian gazelles and oryx. These tours include a visit to a Bedouin-style camp with traditional music, dancing, and food. If you’d prefer an early start to your day, you can take a morning tour of the reserve, to watch and learn about the wildlife in the desert under the rising sun. Fees to the Dubai Desert Conservation Reserve help to further conservation efforts, and visitors can feel a meaningful connection to desert wildlife.
Those looking for a more immersive experience can opt to camp overnight in the desert. These tours offer wildlife viewing, camel rides, traditional cooking demonstrations, falconry displays, and sleeping in a Bedouin-style tent. The evening always includes traditional entertainment and views of the stars under a desert sky. Breakfast includes Arabic coffee, traditional food prepared while you watch, and entertaining tales from the locals.

For a different view of the desert, consider watching the sun rise from a hot air balloon. These tours offer an early morning hot air balloon ride over the Dubai Desert Conservation Reserve where you can watch wildlife roam underneath the rising sun. The balloon ride is accompanied by a falcon display while in the air, and then gourmet breakfast on the ground before you travel back to Dubai.
If traveling by air is your thing, you may want to consider a seaplane or helicopter tour of Dubai and its surroundings. Or hire a car and drive to the nearby town of Al Ain for at least one night. Al Ain has forts, oases, a zoo, and souqs for some traditional shopping. Visitors here feel they’re experiencing the real UAE, and thoroughly enjoy this relaxed, authentic Arabian town.
GULF COAST AND INDIAN OCEAN
Visitors to Dubai can also choose a variety of tours to explore the spectacular waters in the area. Experience traditional life with a day trip to Oman where you can journey over the water on a wooden ‘dhow’ sailboat. Begin with a drive through the Hajar Mountains to the Gulf of Oman where you board this traditional boat and sail along the Musandam coast, passing villages, watching dolphins, and swimming and snorkeling.

Other tours offer the chance to swim in the Indian Ocean on the East Coast of the UAE. Visit a fishing village nearby, shop at the Friday Market, and the enjoy some time on the beach and in the ocean. The scenery to and from the ocean is always part of the appeal of this day trip.
Some of the beaches closest to Dubai are only open to visitors of the resorts they are linked to. If a day at the beach is on your wish list, ask your host for suggestions before heading out. The water is warm, the beaches have white sand, and the views are outstanding.
Perhaps you’d like to take a day trip to the ‘Pearl of the Gulf’ – Sharjah, where you can experience the history and culture of the area in the country’s cultural capital. Explore traditional markets, and visit the Islamic museum, King Faizal mosque, and Sharjah Fort and heritage center.
AIRBNB EXPERIENCES
Airbnb offers a variety of experiences in and around Dubai. These are often operated by individuals who are passionate about sharing unique experiences from a local perspective with Airbnb guests. Options include a day hike at Jabal Jais (the highest mountain in the UAE), scuba diving in the Indian Ocean off the shores of Fujairah, traveling through the Souq Al Jubail market in Sharjah with a local expert, taking a kayak tour and snorkeling in a Marine Protected Area led by a marine conservationist, sandboarding until dusk and then sharing a picnic while watching the sun go down, and taking a guided jet ski tour.
Once you’ve booked your Airbnb it’s a great idea to take a look at the options for these experiences. If something looks interesting, but you need different dates, just click on the ‘see dates’ option, and a pop up window will open with an option to contact the host/guide directly. Since these are often operated by individuals or small businesses you are likely to find greater flexibility and personalized options to fill your visit with memories to last a lifetime.
ABU DHABI
There are a variety of opportunities to take a day tour to Abu Dhabi. Must-sees include a tour of the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque, Saadiyat Island (including the newly opened Louvre Abu Dhabi), Yas Island (home of the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix and Ferrari World theme park), and the Al Hosn Palace. EXPO 2020 – Dubai
Expo 2020 will be one of the most significant events in Dubai’s modern history. The first event of this magnitude to take place anywhere in the middle east, it represents the UAE’s new identity as a worldwide travel destination. The theme for Expo 2020 is Connecting Minds, Creating the Future. It will be an exposition of innovation, ingenuity, and collective human potential such as the world has never seen before.
Over 180 countries will be represented during the six-month exposition, and more than 25 million people are expected to visit—at least 70% from outside the UAE. It is an opportunity for Dubai to show the world their ability to host events on such a grand scale, and that Dubai is a place not to be missed when making travel plans.
The overall impact of Expo 2020 to Dubai has three phases: construction and preparation until October 2020, during the event from October 2020 to April 2021, and post-event. Throughout all of these, one constant is the need for accommodations; for those involved in the development of the site, for the visitors coming during the exposition, and then for the ongoing boost in tourism that this event will generate. It’s estimated Expo 2020 will create a need for 70 million additional room-nights. Those investing in providing accommodations will see strong ROI before, during, and after Expo 2020 with non-Expo visitors to Dubai already estimated to be 16 million guests.
Careful planning for sustainable development is underway. More than 80% of development for Expo 2020 will continue to be in use. This is not a one-time event for Dubai. Rather, it is part of an ongoing plan to diversify Dubai’s economy and attract businesses and tourists. The subthemes of Expo 2020 are Opportunity, Mobility, and Sustainability—all clear indications of the long-term impact it will have on the region and the country. All buildings on the expo site will meet a minimum of LEED Gold standards, indicating the commitment to sustainability and efficient building design.
Dubai Marina, United Arab Emirates
Analysts expect the direct financial impact during Expo 2020 to be over 17 billion USD. The further-reaching impact of establishing a world-class venue of immense proportions, along with a reputation for delivering an experience such as an exposition are yet to be seen.
In all, 33 billion USD will be spent on projects related to Expo 2020. The impact will be seen everywhere from the construction industry to tourism, hospitality, residential, and commercial developments. In addition to the Expo site, development includes a residential district designed to accommodate 250,000 residents, and a commercial district that will employ 150,000 people required outside of the temporary positions for Expo 2020.
INFRASTRUCTURE
An influx of over 25 million additional visitors requires some substantial investments in infrastructure. From transportation to sewage treatment, and energy creation to airport capacity, nearly every aspect of Dubai’s infrastructure is undergoing development and improvement. Much of the work being done is below ground. The new buildings are all being built with basements that will become an underground rail and road network, allowing all logistical and support activities to occur outside the visitor’s view.
During construction of Expo 2020, at least 47 construction contracts and 98 non-construction contracts will be issued with a value of over 33 billion USD. Plans are to complete the majority of these projects one year ahead of the start of the event. The impact is extending through the local economy and into the regional and international economy, and the attraction for business and development in Dubai is strong. In 2018 the international participants will move into Dubai to begin work on their pavilions.
Night view of the light show at Dubai Dancing Fountain. The Dubai Fountain, the world largest choreographed fountain on Burj Khalifa Lake area, performs to the beat of the selected music.
Expo 2020 is also making a concerted effort to include small and medium-sized businesses in the tender process, further stimulating job creation and economic growth. Over 50 percent of the contracts awarded to date have been to these businesses. In addition, Dubai is taking a very strong stance regarding worker welfare for the thousands of workers who are so important to construction. These improved standards will also contribute positively to the long-term impact of Expo 2020.
MULTI-SECTOR IMPACT
There are a variety of lesser-known non-construction business sectors that are also seeing a strong boost from Expo 2020. Printing companies, IT and data management, health and safety firms, and all manner of logistics will see an upswing in activity. In addition to meeting the needs for construction materials, businesses are meeting all the needs of workers both on and off-site, and preparing to supply all the products, food, and services that 25 million new visitors will require when they come to Expo 2020.
Dubai’s ability to host such an exhibition demonstrates its attractiveness to investors and businesses looking for the best location to establish corporate offices. Dubai is already becoming one of the top locations for companies participating in our global economy. This location becomes even more desirable because Dubai is less than four hours from one-third of the world’s population.
The impact will reach beyond Dubai, and even beyond the UAE. Expo 2020 will become a catalyst for global development, especially as the subthemes of Sustainability, Mobility, and Opportunity are explored and refined.
LASTING IMPACT
The years of hard work, planning, promoting, and creating Expo 2020 will provide significant and very positive results for Dubai far into the future. Infrastructure is improving across the emirate, providing a sustainable frame for ongoing use and future development. Projects will continue to attract tourists, conferences and conventions, and new businesses. Globally, Dubai is already becoming recognized as a highly desirable destination. The benefits of such positive global exposure are difficult to quantify, but are clearly long-reaching.

It is likely that every business sector within Dubai will see a strong financial benefit from Expo 2020. From shopkeepers to real estate moguls, small businesses to international corporations, the most impressive expo to-date will bring opportunity and prosperity. Dubai’s reputation as a destination for travel and business will be cemented. Those representing Dubai are privileged to share their spectacular city with the world, and the world will forever be changed because of Expo 2020.
