COVID-19 and Airbnb’s Enhanced Cleaning Initiative

Hosts are known for providing sparkling clean houses for guests, but more needed to be done as the coronavirus pandemic began to spread. On March 23, 2020 Airbnb released a set of cleaning guidelines for hosts: Airbnb’s Cleaning Guidelines

First, they recommend waiting 24 hours after guests have left to enter and begin cleaning and disinfecting. While cleaning removes germs and dirt and makes everything look sparkling, disinfecting is what’s needed to kill germs. Clean first, then disinfect.

Further recommendations include:
  • When cleaning, wear protective gear like gloves, aprons or gowns, and facial coverings, and always wash your hands as soon as you take any protective gear off.
  • Open outside doors and windows and let the air circulate before you begin to clean and disinfect.
  • Thoroughly wash hands before and after each cleaning using proper handwashing procedures.
  • Use standard cleaning products to clean, then spray clean surfaces with a disinfectant and let it sit for a few minutes before wiping. Use paper towels as much as possible and always change cleaning cloths between guests and houses.
  • Don’t touch your face.
  • Be sure to use disinfecting solutions that will kill germs—check labels and your local health guidelines.
  • Use appropriate disinfectants for soft surfaces like sofas and rugs if you cannot machine wash them between guests.
  • Wash everything at the highest heat recommended.
  • Wear gloves when handling dirty laundry and don’t shake anything—this can spread germs.
  • Clean and disinfect anything used to hold laundry like baskets and hampers.
  • Empty and disinfect the vacuum cleaner after every cleaning. Disinfect the dishwasher and washing machine, and anything else guests may have touched including shampoo bottles, sports gear, door handles, and remote controls.
  • Never mix household bleach with ammonia or other cleaning solutions.
  • Line all trash cans with disposable bags.
  • Either throw out cleaning supplies like wipes and paper towels after each use, or wash cloths at the highest recommended setting after each use.
  • After cleaning, carefully remove any cleaning gear and either dispose it immediately, or wash in the hottest water recommended. Then wash your hands thoroughly.

Airbnb also encourages hosts to provide additional essential amenities for guests so there’s always plenty of hand soap, paper towels, tissues, and toilet paper. If you can, place hand sanitiser near the entrance and in the bathrooms.

Finally, give your guests peace of mind by leaving a carefully written note about your cleaning procedures and everything you’re doing to keep them safe.
