How to live sustainably in Dubai

Sustainable living is becoming more popular than ever and a growing number of consumers have expressed concerns about protecting the environment. When it comes to living a sustainable life at home, there are many ways that you can do this which can really help the planet. If more and more people try and live a sustainable life, then we could collectively create major, positive changes for the planet.

As described by Wikipedia, sustainable living describes a lifestyle that attempts to reduce an individual’s or society’s use of the Earths natural resources, and one’s personal resources. Being more sustainable isn’t an easily achieved goal you can tick off and the move onto the next thing on your list – it’s a lifelong journey, of learning, experimenting, failing, starting again and sharing your adventure.

To make sustainable living more accessible, Frank Porter share their top tips on how to promote and support an eco-friendlier lifestyle.

Buy local

Purchasing food locally provides many environmental benefits such as preserving small farmland and reducing food miles – which in turn helps alleviate our dependence on fossil fuels, reduces air pollution and cuts back on greenhouse gas emissions.

Invest in reusables

Reusable items are a great way to easily reduce everyday waste and helps as it reduces environmental and economic waste in the process. Try switching to reusable face pads, swap your single use sandwich bags for long lasting silicon bags and try reusable coffee capsules.

Separate your rubbish

Something that is very much on the rise in Dubai, many communities now offer a place for you to separate your plastics, paper, glass and general waste. You can easily do this at home to by having multiple bins to separate your empties.

Bring a reusable bag to the supermarket

I know it’s something that is easy to forget but buy yourself a couple of reusable shopping bags and keep one at home and one in the car so there’s not forgetting!

Shop second hand!

We all have items in our wardrobe that we’ve never worn or that no longer fit –  instead of hoarding them, drop them off at Shop RETOLD, where clothes get a second chance of happiness. Choosing to wear used clothing means you are helping to recycle useful items that might otherwise end up discarded in landfills. There’s also the option to buy pre-loved clothes which helps lower the demand for new clothing to be produced.

Invest in a filtered water tap

The plastic crisis is here, it is real, and it is destroying the marine life at a dangerously alarming rate. Cutting off plastic entirely from one’s life can be tricky. But, a good place to make a start is to entirely ditch plastic bottles. Invest in a filtered water tap (like Quooker) to help you cut back on the plastic water bottles.

Switch off your water heaters

We have all become very used to leaving our water heaters on all day, every day! Switching off your water heater once you’ve had a shower can not only save your water bill, it can also have a positive impact on the environment.

Use public transport

Here in Dubai, we know we’re all slightly dependant on our vehicles. But, using public transport or even carpooling can lessen the impact on the environment by a lot!
